The real reason Queen Elizabeth II doesn’t need a passport

While many leaders of the free world might think of themselves as royalty (looking at you, Donald Trump), almost all of them still need the same thing to travel around the world: a passport. Except for one, that is — none other than the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II. Ever since being crowned in 1953, the Queen has been able to travel freely around the globe without identification for nearly seven decades.

So, how is this possible? To get an idea, it’s worth it to take a look at a bit of text inserted in every British passport today (and has been, in various iterations, for centuries). As per the royal family’s official website, the text in question is as follows: “Her Britannic Majesty’s Secretary of State requests and requires in the name of Her Majesty all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance and to afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary.”

What exactly does this mean? And how does it explain why and how Queen Elizabeth II doesn’t need a passport to get around? Let’s take a closer look.

The explanation for why the Queen doesn't need a passport is a straight-up history lesson

According to a 2006 article from the Guardian, the first iteration of the British passport purportedly surfaced during the reign of King Henry V (or Timothée Chalamet with a bowl cut, for readers who aren’t familiar with the history of the British monarchy).

As the Guardian explained, parliamentary paperwork referring to a “safe conduct” document first popped up in 1414 in regards to ensuring both British subjects and foreign nationals a sense of security while traveling (though the former had to pay for said documents while the latter did not). Due to the fact that these “safe conduct” documents were issued by the monarch themselves (or in this case, Henry V), there was never a need to bestow that permission — it would be redundant, at the very least. Or, as the Atlantic put it in a 2015 article on the subject (no pun intended), the Queen doesn’t need a passport because she essentially is one.

Though these documents came under the jurisdiction of the Privy Council (essentially a cabinet of advisers) in 1540, so although the earliest version of the passport hasn’t been something the ruling British monarch has directly issued for centuries, it’s still something they don’t necessarily need. Even so, only the reigning king or queen can travel without one — as the royal family’s official website states, all other members are required to possess one to travel abroad.

If Queen Elizabeth II doesn't need a passport, why does everyone else?

So, if Queen Elizabeth II doesn’t have to obtain or carry a passport to go in and out of the United Kingdom, then why do other leaders of other countries have to? Once again, the key to this query is all in the passport text.

As the Atlantic pointed out in 2015, the issuance text in the typical U.K. passport calls the Queen, “her Britannic Majesty” — a reference to her as a sovereign. If you compare it to a passport from the United States, you’ll find that a similar type of issuance text names the secretary of state as the one who can “hereby [request] all whom it may concern to permit the citizen/national of the United States named herein.”

You don’t have to look too closely to realize that “sovereign” and “citizen/national” aren’t synonymous — and it’s the reason everyone from the average U.S. resident to the President of the United States needs one to get around.

As with history, U.K. passports repeat themselves… sort of

Unlike Queen Elizabeth II, the Secretary of State (in this case, currently Secretary Mike Pompeo) is both a citizen and employee of the democratic U.S., not a crowned ruler in a country whose government operates as a constitutional monarchy. And while the Queen and the rest of the royal family might have titles that are mostly ceremonial (with a Prime Minister and Parliament that actually operate as a government body), Elizabeth II is still considered a sovereign first and foremost.

The question remains: Is this ever likely to change? According to the Express, most likely not — as they put it, after her eventual death any current passport will still be considered valid, and the phrasing of the issuance text will simply be tweaked to refer to whoever succeeds her (either her direct heir Prince Charles, or if he steps aside, his own eldest son, Prince William). The more you know, right?

‘Bachelor’ Couple Arie Luyendyk Jr. & Lauren Burnham Reveal She Suffered Miscarriage

Arie Luyendyk Jr. and Lauren Burnham are opening up about an incredibly painful experience.

The Bachelor couple revealed that Lauren suffered a miscarriage in a new video on YouTube on Saturday (May 30).

PHOTOS: Check out the latest pics of Arie Luyendyk Jr.

The couple documented their journey as they get a pregnancy test and find out, to Lauren‘s surprise, they she is expecting their second child. They also have a 1-year-old daughter together, Alessi.

“We bought a new house with more space, we planned how we wanted to tell you all and we envisioned our future with Alessi‘s little brother/sister. We were planning to share our journey through pregnancy with you, but unfortunately we didn’t get the happy story we had hoped for,” they said.

They revealed that the trouble started with her ultrasound, which showed that the baby looked only 5 weeks old when it should have been 8 weeks along. After waiting another week, they returned to discover that she had suffered a missed miscarriage, which happens when the embryo has died, but has not been physically miscarried.

“It’s been a roller coaster of emotions going from scared at first a little bit because it was so soon, then happy, then stress and worry for weeks on end, and then obviously today was the bad news. It’s consumed our thoughts for the last month. It’s been hard holding this back from everybody,” Arie said.

“I was really excited to tell you guys that we were pregnant, and I feel like this is the best way for us to tell the whole story,” Lauren added.

“Hopefully the next time you see a video with the word pregnancy it’s positive and it’s good news,” Arie went on to say, hopefully.

Arie also debuted a new look in quarantine.

Supergirl’s Melissa Benoist Discusses White Privilege & Says This ‘Isn’t the World I Want’ for Her Child

Melissa Benoist is getting candid about the Black Lives Matter protests, as well as her white privilege.

The 31-year-old Supergirl star, who is pregnant with her first child with Chris Wood, spoke out on her Instagram on Saturday (May 30).

PHOTOS: Check out the latest pics of Melissa Benoist

“I have struggled with the words to use, I thought words didn’t belong in this fight, that I didn’t have the right to talk about the issue of privilege of being white, because I didn’t have lived experience of being a person of color in the United States. I’ve felt helpless in not knowing how to take action. I was afraid of messing up, of saying the wrong thing. No more. I made a promise to a friend of mine this week that I would not be silent anymore, that I would stand in solidarity with my voice and my actions, not just my heart. That’s not just a promise to him. This burden is too much for black people to bear alone anymore. I am beyond ashamed that they have had to for so long,” she wrote.

“I’m about to bring a child into this world, and this isn’t the world I want him to know. I want to be a part of a generation that actually ensures change, so that my son’s generation does not have to endure this kind of heartbreak, so that his generation will know the truths of white privilege and how to combat it. His parents will educate him as best we can while we simultaneously educate ourselves.”

Last year, Melissa bravely opened up about this experience.

Alexis Skyy Falling Out With Her Bestie Tiara Over Some Petty Money

The ‘Love and Hip Hop’ star’s friend, Tiara, claims that the Instagram model refuses to pay her $1,300 for ‘hair’ that she used for a show, and shares screenshots of their text conversation.

AceShowbizAlexis Skyy has had a fallout with another of her friends. Her so-called bestie, who goes by @misstiaraaa on Instagram, aired out her beef with the reality TV star on the photo-sharing application, accusing Alexis of failing to pay her $1,300 for the “hair” that she used for a show.

Tiara supported her claim with screenshots of their text conversation. In it, Tiara said that she had asked for her money since February, but when she asked Alexis again to send the money via PayPal earlier this month, the Instagram model said she couldn’t do it via PayPal and would deliver the money when she returned to Atlanta instead.

Later on May 20, Tiara asked Alexis again if she had fixed her cash application and if she could send her the money. But the “Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood” star changed her tune, saying that she would return the hair because she said she was borrowing it instead of buying it and that the hair was never used.

That’s when things got ugly, with Tiara warning Alexis, “I’m trying to be nice.” Alexis didn’t take it well, clapping back, “Be nice about what you can’t force me to buy.” Tiara still demanded her money, replying to Alexis, “Nah I ain’t gotta force you to buy anything but I want what’s mine.”

In a caption of the screeshot, Tiara went on blasting Alexis, “Your Favorite IG model @alexisskyy_ d**n b***h I can’t believe you would do some s**t like this to me knowing my heart is always pure. I don’t even be on s**t like this at all but b***h you tried it. You blocked me from your phone and still won’t give me my money it’s only $1300.00 sis!!!”

“Then you had the f***ing nerve to have your assistant tell me y’all gone order me some of y’all bulls**t a** raw hair because you only got two bundles of my hair left!” she continued. “B***h you got the right one.. so if y’all ever wondered why this b***h fall out with everybody its because of s**t like this!!!”

Insisting that she’s not the wrong one in this situation, Tiara added, “I dead a** tried to be nice about this situation but the next post gone show how delusional this bird is.”

Just last month, Alexis was beefing with her former friend Ikey, accusing him of stealing her bag. Denying her allegation, the fashion entrepreneur hit back by airing her dirty laundry, which led to Alexis slapping him with a cease and desist letter.
