Piers Morgan, 55, gave Dan Walker, 44, a backhanded compliment today on Twitter today as the former Good Morning Britain presenter had “hoped” the BBC Breakfast host would have been “a lot worse” on the Strictly Come Dancing dancefloor. The former Britain’s Got Talent judge is known for his online ribbing of his one time TV rival, as he frequently aims jibes on social media at the ex-Football Focus presenter, and today was no different.

Piers could not resist the opportunity to critique Dan’s incredible performance this evening on Strictly as he made his show debut with partner Nadiya Bychkova.

The MailOnline columnist typed: “Very disappointing dance by @mrdanwalker – I was hoping he’d be a lot worse than that… #Strictly.”

In response Piers’ fans asked when it would be his turn to bust some moves in the BBC contest.

@Ann1p commented: “If Piers Morgan does Strictly it would be worth every single penny of the Licence Fees.”

@Arw84 remarked: “Your turn…”

@Cyclingdebbie said: “Dan was absolutely EXCELLENT! Very well done and it’s Week 1!  Going to be very good & I shall never look at the BBC Breakie Show set furniture in the same way again!”(sic)

Dan danced the quickstep with partner Nadiya and scored a creditable 24 points after surprising the judges.

The 44-year-old, who left Crawley when he was 18, showed some promising skills on the dancefloor as the pair danced to Everybody Needs Somebody to Love from the Blues Brothers.

And he got some great compliments from the judges.

Anton Du Beke said: “I was a bit nervous about this I thought you were going to be awful. But you were terrific. I love your energy, you covered the floor. Brilliant.”

Craig Revel Horwood was negative saying: “I can see you mouthing the counts.”

Motsi Mabuse said: “That was not a perfect quickstep. But what I loved is you risked something, you came out on the dance floor and gave it your best.”

Head judge Shirley Ballas said: “You need some essential ingredients, you have the height and I have never seen a neck that long in all my life. You have very very long arms and very long legs so from point A point B, the width, the volume the prospect is unbelievable.”

It comes as Piers could not help but gloat at the news of Strictly’s low viewing figures during last week’s launch show.

Sharing an article on Strictly’s viewing figures, the former Good Morning Britain host tagged Dan in the post and typed sarcastically: “Congrats,” with a thumbs-up emoji.

Strictly launched with seven million viewers last Saturday, the lowest audience since the series introduced a standalone “pairing up” show back in 2010.

It fell way behind last year’s opener – delayed because of Covid – which aired in October and pulled in 8.6 million viewers, the show’s highest launch since 2017 (8.8 million) and up 800,000 on the 2019 audience of 7.8 million.

Last weekend, the show peaked with 7.3 million viewers, as the contestants were shown meeting their professional partners in pre-recorded films.

The standalone launch episodes were introduced for the eighth series of Strictly in 2010.
