BT and Virgin Media continue to roll out ludicrously fast 1Gbps broadband across the country with this latest technology able to whizz a full a full HD blockbuster movie to your TV in under 40 seconds. That’s very impressive but accessing the ultimate internet also comes at a premium. Those wanting to feel the full force of this fast fibre will need to stump up around £60 per month for the privilege which isn’t exactly cheap.

Now another smaller rival to these major Internet Service Providers (ISPs) has launched a deal which is offering customers the chance to try hyperfast downloads at a much-reduced price.

Hull-based KCOM is allowing its customers to test out its different speeds for six months for a fixed price of just £25 per month.

That means you can give the firm’s Gigafast Unlimited package a try at a vastly lower cost to see if you really need those blisteringly quick downloads.

As KCOM explains on its website, “For 6 months, you’ll be free to try any speed to find the perfect one for your home. Whether you’re unsure what speed you need or just looking to experience what gigafast has to offer, we’ve made it simple to switch anytime.”

Along with that premium option KCOM also offers 400Mbps, 200Mbps and 70Mbps with each varying in cost.

Once the six months is up you can then choose which plan suits your needs with the rest of the 18-month contract charged at the standard price.

It’s a nice idea from KCOM as, although 1Gbps speeds sound enticing, not everyone really needs to invest in that much power.

For an average home, 200Mbps should be perfectly adequate although those with families who are downloading endless PS5 games, blockbuster movies and making video calls at the same time might want to consider moving up to 1Gbps.

If you weren’t already aware, the web in your home is a bit like a motorway so the more traffic that runs along it, the slower it gets. That’s why it’s a good idea to make sure the speeds you sign up for can cope with the amount of information you’re going to pump through it.

As with most of these smaller BT and Virgin Media rivals, KCOM is only available in limited parts of the UK including Hull and East Yorkshire.

However, it does show that it’s worth shopping around and checking who supplies broadband in your street as you may find a firm that offers faster speeds other than the main ISPs such as BT, Virgin, TalkTalk and Sky.

Here’s how much each plan costs from KCOM costs after the first 6 months is up.

Gigafast Unlimited • 900Mbps – £79 per month

Ultrafast Unlimited • 400Mbps – £50 per month

Superfast Plus Unlimited • 200Mbps – £46 per month

Superfast Unlimited • 75Mbps – £42 per month
