Led Zeppelin: Why You Hear Robert Plant's Vocals Echoing on 'Whole Lotta Love'

You can point to several landmark songs in the career of Led Zeppelin. In the early days, “Dazed and Confused” served as a showcase for the band’s explosiveness in live performances. And, later, “Kashmir” represented a high point for Zeppelin on several levels.

But you could argue “Whole Lotta Love” was the song that established Zep as an unstoppable force in rock ‘n’ roll. Between the epic Jimmy Page riff and theremin-fueled “freakout” section in the middle, the first track of Led Zeppelin II made quite a statement in 1969.

More than 50 years later, “Whole Lotta Love” still stands out for the gut-punch drums and other sounds Page and his engineers achieved in the studio. And by this point Zep fans are well aware of the track’s quirks, beginning with the vocals of Robert Plant.

Following an array of stereo pans and other effects, you hear the oddest thing at the 04:00 mark. While howling his “Wayyyyyy down inside, woman,” you actually hear Plant’s voice anticipate the lines he’s about to sing. It was a studio accident Page decided to leave on “Whole Lotta Love.”

You can hear Robert Plant pre-echo his lines late in ‘Whole Lotta Love’

After the opening verses and freakout, Zep transitions to the latter part of the song with a thunderous drum part by John Bonham (around 3:00). Then Page enters the mix with one of his great solos. Once the band runs through another verse, it feels like the song is about to end.

But then the music cuts off and you hear what sounds like Plant’s voice singing in a studio next door. His faint “Way down inside” is followed by Plant’s full-throated “WAY DOWN INSIDE.” Then the same thing happens on the next line.

According to engineer Eddie Kramer (who mixed the album with Page), that happened because Plant recorded vocals on two different tracks. No matter how he tried to get rid of the second, fainter vocal on one of those tracks, Kramer couldn’t do it.

“Even when I turned the volume down all the way on the track we didn’t want, [Plant’s] powerful voice was bleeding through the console and onto the master,” Kramer told the Wall Street Journal in 2014. So he and Page decided to make the best of this “pre-echo.”

Jimmy Page and Eddie Kramer made the accident a feature of ‘Whole Lotta Love’

As Kramer recalled it, neither he nor Page fretted once they realized they couldn’t eliminate Plant’s second vocal. Instead, they both went for knobs on the studio console to make it sound better, making one another laugh in the process.

“Our instincts were the same: to douse the faint, intruding voice in reverb so it sounded part of the master plan,” Kramer told WSJ. For Page, it represented exactly the sort of thing he looked for while producing Zeppelin.

“Robert’s faraway voice sounded otherworldly, like a spirit anticipating the vocal he was about to deliver,” Page told the Journal. “I hadn’t heard anything like that before and loved it.”

Mixed in with the echoes, panning, and other studio effects you hear on the song, many listeners simply assumed Page planned to put it on the record that way. That certainly wasn’t the case at first.

Rob Gronkowski Says Tom Brady Called Him ‘Crying’ About Tampa Bay Trade

Missing his buddy. Tom Brady made an emotional plea for his former New England Patriots teammate Rob Gronkowski to join him on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The 31-year-old tight end recalled the tearful phone call he had with Brady, 42, during his appearance on The Late Late Show With James Corden on Thursday, May 21.

“He went through his whole process,” Gronkowski said. “He did what he had to do and then I called him and I was like, ‘Ooh, Tampa Bay, baby.’ I was like, ‘How’s the weather down there?’ He’s like, ‘Oh, it’s great. It’s fantastic.’”

He continued, “And then I was like, ‘Oh, man. You know, Tom, I’ve been thinking about football a little bit.’ I’m just teasing with him and he’s like — I can just tell he’s getting all this excitement. And then I’m like, ‘Oh, my mom lives down there too, like an hour away, you know. It’d be great to have a new opportunity.’”

Eventually, Brady couldn’t hold in his excitement at the possibility of playing on the same team as Gronkowski once again.

“And all of a sudden he just screams on the phone, ‘Rob, I just want you to come back and play with me!’” the New York native said. “And I was like, ‘Well, all right. All right. I’ll come back then, Tom. No problem.’”

Gronkowski added, “He was crying like, ‘Oh, my God. Just please come back.’ And I was like, ‘Wow, you just missed me that much?’ I had to come back.”

The NFL announced in April that Gronkowski — who retired from football in March 2019 — had signed an offer to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the 2020-2021 NFL season. The Masked Singer contestant previously played with the Patriots for nine seasons from 2010 to 2019.

Brady celebrated the news at the time writing via Instagram, “Time to run it back Gronky!”

The California native, for his part, signed with Tampa Bay in March ending his 20-season career with the Patriots, where he led the team to six Super Bowl victories.

Brady and his wife, Gisele Bündchen, have since relocated their two kids Benjamin, 10 and Vivian, 7, from Boston to Tampa, Florida. Brady also shares son John, 12, with his ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan.

Gronkowski and Brady are also good pals outside of the gridiron. Brady praised his friend’s penis as “amazing” while talking with Howard Stern in April. Later that month, the University of Arizona alum told Andy Cohen that it did “kind of surprise” him to hear Brady talk about his manhood, but he was ultimately flattered.

“Oh man,” Gronkowski said. “Well, he did describe [mine] as looking ‘amazing,’ which I think is the biggest compliment in my career, along with playing with Tom.”

The mum-of-two was recently accused by her baby daddy, Rob, of attacking him with a six-foot metal pole just a month after their daughter Dream was born.

But now the model – whose real name is Angela Renee White – is claiming she has proof the attack never took place.

According to The Blast, Blac Chyna says that in an interview with the Department of Children and Family Services, Rob himself says Chyna never hit him.

It was reported that Rob claimed to have “believed that Chyna intended to inflict severe injury on him and feared for his life".

Chyna claims in the report, Kardashian admits his baby mama never hit him.

According to new documents, Rob also filed new excerpts along with new statements in the ongoing lawsuit where he alleges Blac Chyna attacked him and strangled him with an iPhone cord.

New details of the alleged 2016 assault against him by then-girlfriend Chyna allege that she was under the influence of cocaine and attacked him with a six-foot metal pole.

The reality star, who is currently in the midst of a custody battle over Dream with Chyna, is said to claim: "Although Chyna did not drink or use drugs while she was pregnant with and breastfeeding Dream, as soon as she stopped breastfeeding dream in the second week of December 2016, she started drinking to excess and using cocaine again."

On the day of the incident, Rob claims "Chyna participated in a photoshoot at the Hidden Hills house, along with photographers, a makeup artist, a hairstylist, Chyna’s friends, members of her entourage and others.”

He alleges that during the day, "Chyna consumed large amounts of Moet Rose champagne and snorted cocaine.

He said: "As the day went on…he says she became "increasingly erratic, aggressive and violent behavior as she became more and more intoxicated."

Since The Blast broke the story, Blac Chyna has responded to the claims via her lawyer, claiming there is no truth to the allegations.

Blac Chyna's lawyer Lynn Ciani said there was “NO violent attack, and that this is just another one of Rob's lies".
