It’s always a difficult decision for soap bosses to break the news to an actor that their character is going to die – but what is a soap stunt week without at least one death?
Emmerdale boss Kate Brooks has revealed that the choice to kill off a character is a heavy choice and assured that it is always based on the storyline that will come out of it.
In a major week with the survival event going tragically wrong, at least one character will lose their life as Meena Jutla’s (Paige Sandhu) revenge spirals out of control.
Asked how she decided who would be killed off, Kate told Metro.co.uk: ‘We don’t take the decisions lightly and we know when you introduce a character with a thirst for murder, not everyone will survive.
‘We base the decisions primarily on what creates the best story going forward. We wanted to make sure every kill has impact and changes people and the outcome isn’t always what we expect or indeed hope.
‘It’s hard to gauge the right characters, it’s very story and character led.’
And with Meena around, she is bound to be responsible. Loving the dynamic that Meena’s sociopathic ways creates in such a week, Kate told us that they couldn’t resist putting her at the centre.
She explained: ‘The big week has floated around in terms of a survival challenge but we didn’t know the ins and outs and Meena arrived and she’s brilliant, when Meena is around anything can happen.
‘Once we mooted a general idea, and we had such a great character like Meena at our disposal, it’s a marriage made in heaven. A perfect backdrop for her to wreak havoc.’
Kate added: ‘It is very safe to say there will be a lot of repercussions, what happens will impact some of our well loved characters. This is just the start of something that will change lives forever.
‘It’s big exciting and explosive but these weeks fall short if they don’t give us bigger stories coming out. There are a lot of new directions
‘It was imperative to root it in character driven stories as much as the stunts and visuals. Some characters get a happy ever after, others aren’t so lucky…’
