Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) has done nothing but praise Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) following his return to Coronation Street.

To most of the Weatherfield residents, they all believe Stephen’s minted thanks to his highly successful business in Milan – but if tonight’s episode is anything to go by, that isn’t true.

Keeping his chipper mood, Stephen attended a lunch with Roy (David Neilson), Ken (William Roache) and Rita (Barbara Knox) to discuss a way of cheering Audrey (Sue Nicholls) up.

Topic of conversation turned to an afternoon tea at Chariot Square Hotel – the one Debbie (Sue Devaney) owns.

Desperate to drum up business again, Debbie praised the hotel’s afternoon tea and made sure the friends knew they could spend all afternoon there.

With the idea formed, in the café, Stephen’s stresses began to increase when he paid using coins and also needed to pay the deposit for Audrey’s afternoon tea.

His card declined, Stephen called his Italian bank and wanted to extend his overdraft.

Sarah and Shona (Julia Goulding) were amused at how angry Stephen was – it was very clear the perception of him being absolutely loaded was a false one.

At the Platt’s, Stephen called the hotel and prepared to pay.

Reading out his bank details, the waitress asked for the name on the card – and it wasn’t Stephen’s.

Stephen used a card with the name Gabrielle Reid on – but who is that?

Could it be his wife?

And what has happened in Stephen’s past that’s made him lose everything?
