The 12th season of NCIS: Los Angeles is finally returning to screens next week after taking a hiatus of almost a month. As the popular CBS spin-off continues, a new trailer has raised concerns for the life of Agent Sam Hanna (played by LL Cool J) after he falls victim to a state-of-the-art deep fake.

Sam Hanna’s life could be on the line in the next explosive episode of NCIS: Los Angeles, coming to screens this Sunday.

The wildly successful CBS offshoot took a lengthy hiatus after the latest episode of season 12, ‘The Noble Maidens’.

Following some shocking twists and turns for Callen (Chris O’Donnell) and his elusive girlfriend Anna Kolcheck (Bar Paly), Sam Hanna will take centre stage when the series returns.

Unfortunately, it appears the highly skilled agent may have met his match as a new promotional clip gave fans a glimpse at his next case.

The 30-second scene was uploaded on Wednesday to tease the highly anticipated next episode, ‘Imposter Syndrome’.

Hanna’s latest showcase will throw him headfirst into a deadly trap, convinced he’s actually liaising with fellow agent Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah).

An official synopsis reads: “NCIS obtains a hard drive containing a realistic deep fake video of a deceased terrorist and must retrieve the dangerous technology behind it.

“However, when the team’s comms are hijacked during their mission, they find that one of their own has been a victim of its potential.”

NCIS is known for tackling hot button issues, and the LA team’s latest case will explore the eerily convincing deep fake videos that have been taking the internet by storm over the last couple of years.

Hanna and his fellow agents will soon discover the advanced technology could have dangerous ramifications if it gets into the wrong hands.

The new clip previews a tense sequence in which the cautious agent makes his way down a dark corridor, his weapon at the ready.

The voice of Kensi Blye seems to be emitting from his earpiece to give him directions.

He arrives outside a door, and enquires where Kensi and the rest of the team are.

Kensi’s voice claims the group is circling back to meet him, but the scene slowly reveals the horrific reality of the scenario.

Instead of the rest of his team, the door is actually hiding a deadly booby trapped rigged to explode as soon as it’s opened.

If Hanna falls for his enemies’ trick, he could get caught in a devastating blast and potentially land himself a trip to the hospital.

Luckily, LL Cool J hasn’t been tipped to depart the series any time soon, so this particular bit of subterfuge probably won’t end with the agent’s demise.

Then again, this season is certainly about to heat up after it returns from a lengthy midseason break to finally deliver the final four episodes of the new season.

NCIS: Los Angeles has just been confirmed to return for season 13, but will Sam Hanna still be on the team after being duped by some convincing deep fake trickery?

NCIS: Los Angeles season 12 continues Sunday, May 2 on CBS.
