Young Sheldon follows the title character, who became a household name following the premiere of The Big Bang Theory, during the early years of his life. Fans get to see Sheldon (played by Iain Armitage) back in school, still outsmarting everyone around him. CBS has aired four seasons of the show, but will there be season five?

Will there be a fifth season of Young Sheldon?

Fans can rest easy, as before season four ended, CBS gave Young Sheldon a three-year renewal deal, meaning there is plenty left for The Big Bang Theory prequel series.

The new deal means the show will continue running until at least 2023/2024, with season five just being the start.

Seasons six and seven are also part of the renewal, this is similar to when CBS gave the series a two-year renewal in 2019 for seasons three and four.

It is not clear if season seven will be the last for the series, though judging by the momentum CBS has given the show, it seems likely it will continue beyond it.

What is the release date for season five?

Young Sheldon’s release schedule has been impacted as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which altered the filming of season four.

The last season premiered in November 2020, missing its traditional date of September as filming had to adapt to the new restrictions.

Season four also received a shorter run than usual, with only 18 episodes, five shorter than seasons one through three.

CBS has not confirmed a release date for season five, though it will likely premiere around the same time, late September to early November.

Young Sheldon has been following its title character for four years now, with Sheldon being 11 years old by the time season four ends.

It isn’t clear how season five will continue following this, though it will likely continue the show’s usual format.

Neither is it expected for Sheldon to leave junior high yet, with that plot point expected to occur later in season six or seven.

The series will eventually need to show events that were discussed in The Big Bang Theory, such as the aftermath of George Sr (Lance Barber) and Mary’s (Zoe Perry) marriage breakdown.

During the final episodes of season four, Sheldon’s parents George and Mary get into an explosive argument, foreshadowing events to come.

Young Sheldon is created by Steven Molaro and Chuck Lorre, both will be back overseeing season five and beyond.

Molaro and Lorre were producers and writers for The Big Bang Theory, respectively, bringing their veteran experience to the prequel series.

Jim Parsons, who played Sheldon in the original series also returns as the flashback narrator for the show, tying the two shows more closely together.

CBS has not yet released a trailer for the upcoming fifth season, though fans are still waiting for it to inevitably drop later this year.

Taking to Twitter, many fans have voiced their love for the show, with many responding to the news of the season five renewal.

One fan said: “I love this show. The star is a brilliant little Sheldon. Makes me laugh. What a concept, a family-friendly show that distracts us for half an hour. Lighten up! We all need comic relief to keep up the good fight.”

Another added: “Best news I’ve heard in my life! I look forward to watching more seasons of the boy who would grow up to become the great theoretical physicist that is Dr. Sheldon Lee Cooper!

“Soar high and keep moving mountains, Young Sheldon. You truly are a Mighty Little Man! BAZINGA!!!”

Young Sheldon is available to watch weekly on CBS.
